The Great Indoor-Outdoor Controversy

By Franny Syufy, About.com

But on balmy spring mornings, when I see my golden boy blissfully soaking up the warmth of the sun, on his chaise lounge on our deck or I watch Bubba fishing for minnows at the water's edge, or remember Arthur pouncing at dried leaves on the deck, I can't imagine caging them indoors. It just wouldn't seem right.

Nontheless, I also know that if we were to move to an urban area, our kitties would be confined indoors, like it or not, unless we could arrange some kind of covered outdoor enclosure.

Bottom line is, responsible cat lovers must analyze their own particular situation and make choices that are appropriate for the safety and happiness of their kitty companions, for after all, they depend entirely on us.

Most cats, when they are out, want to be in, and vice versa, and often simultaneously. -

Writer's Note: Shannon left us for the Rainbow Bridge on July 13, 2001, at the ripe old age of nineteen. He had a wonderful life and taught us much about life and love. Shannon took being a cat very seriously, you see, and these articles are the legacy of my faithful "GuideCat." It is also appropriate to note here that Shannon's final year was served under the shadow of FIV, a disease which was directly related to his indoor-outdoor living, and which caused a revision in my opinion about the subject.
