Litter-ally Speaking

The Real Scoop

By Franny Syufy, About.com

Litter Scoopers

"The pooper scoopers were designed for the old clay litter and only to scoop poop. In addition they always break. I bought a metal spatula with little round holes in the cooking section of the store. It works great with the modern litter and hasn't broken."

"I have also switched from plastic pooper scoopers to metal spatulas... which are perfect for flipping doo-doo pancakes into the trash bag. (It's all in the wrist!)

Metal spatulas are quite durable, you can bend them to just the exact angle you prefer, and they tend to smell less (call me crazy, but I could swear that the smell of cat urine would "soak through" the plastic in my old scoopers!)"

Litter Boxes

Littermaid: "The pluses far outweigh the minuses. It does contain the smell as it does scoop and hold it in a closed container. You can use premium clumping litter - or even the new clumping corn cob litter. Matter of fact I think the corn cob litter works even better (but of course that is more expensive to use) You rarely have to completely dump the litter as it cleans out the clumps really well and always seems clean and fresh - at least to me.

The only drawbacks I can think of are minor - but will mention them since you asked. Of course the price. Also they do tend to be rather noisy - my husband is a light sleeper and he can hear it during the night. You have to place it near an outlet (unless you put in batteries, but with ours running all the time with so many cats I don't think I could afford to keep up with batteries). Litter does seem to scatter around the Littermaid more than other boxes, or maybe I just have messier cats."

"I absolutely love the Littermaid litter box and so do my 2 cats. In fact when I got Daisy my 4 month old I set up a second regular cat box in the bedroom and the littermaid in the office and she never even went into the regular box. It has great odor control and is so much easier to maintain.---"

Clever Cat Box: "My mom bought me a really new, deep litter box. It is 15" tall. Although she puts two liners in the litter box, I still like reach up and claw the walls of the box, but instead shred the liners (she puts double liners in the box for this reason). I'll let her explain it."

"Hi, it's Angelica here. I bought this excellent Clever Cat Box for Whimsey a few months ago, and it is excellent. It came with a lot of liners that you put in the litter box and fold the extra length over the top of the box, then snap on the lid. The lid has a big hole, through which the cats enter. Because the litter box is so deep, very little litter gets tracked around the apartment."
