Nothing can compare to the companionship of a cat

Welcome to Introduction to Cat Care. Before starting this course, if you have not yet adopted a cat, I'd suggest you first study the course, "Before You Get Your First Cat." It contains only four lessons, but will get you off on the right start on choosing a cat, if you are really ready for a cat.

If you've just adopted your first cat, you'll have lots of questions about his or her care which I hope to cover with these lessons. This course is ongoing, and no matter when you sign up, you'll start with lesson one, and move on to the end, when you and your cat will "graduate."

We're starting off Lesson One with kitty's "Safe Room" and "Cat-Proofing."

The Safe Room

It Doesn't Have to be a Room at All
Whether its a closet or a screened off section of another room, your new cat's safe room should be self-contained, with all his needs:

  • Food and Water
  • A Bed or Blanket to Sleep on
  • A Litter Box
  • Toys
We'll cover all these items in more detail in a few days. I'd suggest waiting until then to make the more expensive purchases, if at all possible.

Cat-Proofing Your Home

Getting "Down and Dirty"
Although it will take a bit of time, cat-proofing your home isn't rocket science. It only requires your willingness to get down to a cat's level to spy out hazardous temptations. You'll soon learn to "think like a cat."

Your First "Assignment"

Join the About Cats Forum
You'll undoubtedly have questions about one or more of the lessons. Since I am often unable to answer one-on-one questions due to the volume of my email, you can still received expert help with most questions from the many knowledgeable and helpful forum members.

It is very likely that you will want to stick around and become one of the "regulars."
