Since June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month, we've decided to observe it in a couple of ways. The first was the new series of Shelter Sheets, which were designed to help cats that are adopted stay adopted. This week we're starting with a tribute to various shelters and the selfless folks who staff them and volunteer for the sake of the animals. Being a shelter worker is often a thankless, heartbreaking job with a few rewards scattered here and there in the form of a lick on the hand, or a frenzy of purring as a cat or dog is introduced to its new human family.

Our first spotlighted shelter is the Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC) of New York, with facilities in each of the five boroughs. CACC is New York's only open admission shelter, and takes in close to 60,000 homeless animals annually. In 2000, its five facilities took in 28,901 cats alone.

A well-organized volunteer program helps with the goal of providing the highest quality of animal care to the community. Pets are carefully screened for suitability to adoption, and are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped before being released for adoption. A foster care program provides the special quality of life missing in a shelter environment, but crucial for queens with litters or feral kittens that need socialization before moving into a permanent home.
