Gifts for the Discerning Cat Dateline:12/18/99
Is your cat jaded? Bored with the feather-dangle pole he just had to have last year? Are you in a quandry about what to get "the cat who has everything"?
Since this is the season of conspicuous consumerism, I decided to let my fingers do the walking for you, by scoping out the niftiest online gifts for cats.
You must hurry though, because there aren't many shopping days left 'til Christmas, although these gifts would be appropriate year-round.
Visa card clenched between my teeth, I first visited Manitou Marketing, to check out their Thermo Kitty Bed. This cozy, plush bed has a heating element buried in the padding to guarantee warm tootsies on cold winter nights, and retails for $54.95. Manitou also offers a Thermo Kitty Sill for $59.95, which also comes in an unheated model.
Next, I zipped over to Petopia, where I found a great "toy" for cats to play hide-and-seek in. It's the Cat-a-Trail, an expandable tunnel where cats can burrow to their hearts' delight. You can connect two or more together for added fun, but at $24.97 you might want to start with just one.
Petsmart offered up two great toys for hours of enjoyment. The Tip 'N Totter is a teardrop-shaped plastic toy with a jingle bell hidden inside and a feather tuft on top. At $6.99, it's a bargain. Similar to the Tip 'N Totter is the Cat-A-Ball, which your cat can dribble across the floor while trying to catch the jingly toy inside.
For gourmet dining, treat your kitty to a new stoneware bowl from Signatures Housewares Inc. If you're feeling extra generous, you can add the cannister and/or placemat, and really make him feel like the king he deserves to be.
If you find that last minute shopping is not your cup of catnip, consider a gift in your cat's name. One worthy group is the WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals. For over 40 years field teams from the WSPA have traveled to nearly every corner of the earth to rescue cats and other animals from danger. This year they traveled to more than 70 countries to bring food, gentle veterinary care, warm shelter and spay/neute to cats who have no other hope. You may mail your donations to:
WSPA

or call 1-800-883-WSPA
(They also accept credit cards.)
Here's wishing a very Merry Christmas to you and your special feline friend!
