Judge's Cat Biography

Judith Kautz
I have been a cat lover since 1966 when I housesat for someone with a very likeable cat. It was quite a learning experience because during my stay the cat managed to find her way into the inner wall space of the house. Not knowing that this was a regular excursion of hers, I panicked when I realized that the meowing in the dining room was coming from the cat inside the wall. I thought she had managed to get into the attic and had fallen down through the walls somehow. I had visions of the people returning to their dining room stinking from the smell of the dead cat who had starved inside the walls! Fortunately, the neighbors knew about this occasional behavior quirk and reassured me when I called them in panic about to handle it.
My first cat came from a subsequent litter of this cat's mother. Mine did not have quite the same wandering tendencies as his older step-sister. He was just endlessly loveable and I was hooked.
Since then I have had a wide assortment of cats through the years. The largest number was 14 during the time that my sons and I volunteered for the Humane Society. When a particularly special cat was there for a number of weeks and we knew its time was growing short, we couldn't help but bring it home.
We now have 8 cats on 2 acres on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is close to cat heaven for the cats here. All my cats have always been indoor/outdoor cats because I have been blessed to live places where that is possible. One of our greatest joys is working in the yard in the evening with cats leaping in and out of bushes and tall stands of grass around us. Even our oldest cats can't seem to resist hide-and-seek at sunset.
