2-28-03:  Added last photos of February white cats to the Cats Photo Calendar.

2-27-03:   Today marks the 6th anniversary of my work with About. In honor of the occasion, I've updated the first article I wrote for "The Mining Company," as it was called back then.

Teach a Kid Respect for Cats and Other Animals, and help mold the future of the animal kingdom. This seemed to be a fitting goal for an anniversary column.

2-21-03:  The cat lovers of Rome turned out for their first "Cat Pride" march to advocate protection and funding for the stray cats that are considered "sacred" by many residents of Rome. They are believed to be descendants of the cats that roamed through the Roman temples more than 2,000 years ago.

2-20-03:  Happy Birthday to Jaspurr and Joey, the GuideCats for this site, one year old today!

2-19-03:  Salute to Holly Golightly, the dog who inspired the writing of "How Could You?", the most widely published amimal-related essay in the world, How Could You?by Jim Willis, author of "Pieces of my Heart - Writings Inspired by Animals and Nature."

2-18-03:  The Paw Project announced that California Assemblyman Paul Koretz (D-42nd District) will today introduce AB 395, which could be the nation's first state law to prohibit declawing. This bill follows closely on the heels of the anti-declaw law recently enacted by the West Hollywood City Council. California residents are urged to write Assemblyman Koretz, telling him of your support of this bill. You may write to Assemblyman Paul Koretz, State Capitol, Room 2176, Sacramento, CA 95814-0042,
Fax: (916) 319-2142.

2-14-03:  The AVMA has drafted a model Veterinary Practice Act, which it hopes will be adopted by all states in the U.S. The proposed act appears to mainly address the practices of certain homeopatic veterinarians who prescribe remedies by telephone to out-of-state clients.

2-13-03:  Added two new pages of February white cat photos. Added a new page of Tributes to Special Cats.

2-12-03:  Added Eagle Pack and Balance Diet to the A-Z Cat Food Comparison Pages.

2-11-03:  We're observing Spay and Neuter Month, and have included a number of ways you can help spread the message. If you haven't yet spayed or neutered that new cat, now is surely the time to do it. If you're currently tight on money (aren't we all?), call 1-800-321-PETS for a low-cost spay-neuter clinic in your area.

This blog is also new, along with the "Readers Choice" box in the sidebar and at the bottom of the page, which lists the most-viewed pages on the About Cats site this month. The box displays six at a time, so as you revisit this page, you'll see others on the list.

2-10-03:   Lawmakers in Colorado are considering a bill that would consider pet animals "companions" instead of "property." The effect of this bit of semantic juggling would be that animal abusers (as well as veterinarians) could be sued for loss of companionship in amounts up to $100,000. "If passed, it would be the first such companionship law in the nation, said lawyer Josh Pazour," as quoted in a CNN Law Center article.

2-5-03:   The extreme popularity of the two previous Purrsonality Quizzes has inspired me to create a new one. Cats Purrsonality Quiz #3. This one features color patterns instead of breeds, so if you've ever wondered if you'd reincarnate to a tabby, tuxedo, tortie, or calico, find out if you're a match.

2-1-03:   Did you know that dental disease is one of the most serious problems in feline health? February is Pets Dental Health Month. Follow the links for a complete dental care plan for your cats, along with suggested dental care products.

1-30-03:  Guide Review of "Pet Care in the New Century," a great basis for starting a reference library on cat management. Author Amy Shojai really knows her stuff!

1-28-03:  Guide Review of "Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets" Author Donald R. Strombeck, DVM, PhD., not only makes a good case for home-prepared food, but gives you recipes designed to help manage a number of diseases and conditions.

1-20-03:  Guest Article: Marrying Into the Food Chain. Can a man survive marriage into the food chain, especially when the pack leader is his bride? Stacy Mantle, author of "Conquering the Food Chain: Living Among Animals (Without Becoming One)" thinks so, and tells how her new hubby assimilated into the food chain in their household.
