Q: I notice that my cat seems to be losing weight. Is this common in the summer because of the heat and shedding?
A: Absent any other problems, a small weight loss in the summer is normal. Just like humans, cats do not have quite the same appetite when temperatures soar. However, watch him closely, and if any other symptoms arise, (lethargy, difficulty urinating, etc.) or he continues to lose weight, a trip to the vet would be in order. Also, cats that are overweight and suddenly lose a lot of weight are susceptible to Hepatic Lipidosis (Fatty Liver Disease), which is potentially fatal in a very short time, if not treated.
I'm always of the opinion, "when in doubt, get them to the vet."
