Best Friends has been featured on this site before, and is one of those very special places that deserves extra recognition. Embraced within the white cliffs of Zion National Park in a spot appropriately named "Angel Canyon", Best Friends Animal Sanctuary vibrates with renewed life for the thousands of homeless castaway animals who find the nurturing love that abounds here.
The revolving critter population here never numbers less than 1,800, and happily, most of them find new homes. Those who are deemed unadoptable, live their lives out in pampered contentment, even the crippled, blind and aged. The most famous of the former group was Benton, who has a facility for disabled cats named after him. Benton reigned as host and spokescat for Benton's House for twelve years, until going to Rainbow Bridge in July 1999. Benton House is a fitting memorial to this cat whose life was turned around by the caring volunteers at Best Friends.
Feral Cats provide a painful demonstration of survival of the fittest, and sadly, many of them are too weak, sick, or timid to either survive in the wild, or to be rehabilitated for adoption. Wildcat Village provides a home for these "alley cats", whose lives would otherwise be chopped short. Over 300 feral cats now call Wildcat Village "home", including Jimmy and The Colonel, who both rule as "Top Cats" here. Jimmy declares Wildcat Village "the best thing since catnip". Best Friends' help for Ferals does not stop there, either. With the resources and instructions provided on this site, you can establish your own feral rescue project, such as Pookie's Pals in Massachusetts.
As you read more stories of the Sanctuary, consider the things you might do to support this birthplace of miracles. You could start by becoming a Member, which entitles you to their print magazine, which is published six times a year. How can you resist?
