Is it safe to use melamine food bowls for my cats?

By Franny Syufy, About.com

Question: Is it safe to use melamine food bowls for my cats?
With all the scare about cat foods contaminated with melamine, I wonder if it is safe to feed them in bowls made of melamine?
Answer: Good question, with a two-part answer:
  1. Melamine bowls should not harm your cats as far as the toxicity we're seeing in the recalled cat foods.
  2. On the other hand, cats sometimes develop "kitty acne" on their chins, and one of the most common causes is eating from plastic food dishes. Plastic does develop scratches over time, which become harboring places for all kinds of bacteria. For that reason, I suggest stainless steel or sturdy ceramic bowls with a non-lead glaze.

Having said that, I'd suggest switching from melamine bowls, just to be on the safe side.
