Which Nutro products were recalled?

Question: Which Nutro products were recalled?
I read on MSNBC that the Nutro Natural Choice line has been recalled. However, they just listed entire brands and did not specifiy which particular products were recalled. Franny, can you look into this, please? I’m tired of playing Russian Roulette with my kitty’s diet.
Answer: I agree that multiple news media and other reports on recalls sometimes contain misleading, inaccurate information, subject to interpretation of the consumer.

The fact is that Nutro officials were notified by Menu Foods on April 10th, 2007 that the China wheat gluten believed to be contaminated with melamine had been added to other products, in addition to those previously recalled. At that time, Nutro decided to recall ALL of their products which contain wheat gluten. Here's the scoop, straight from the Nutro web site:

  • "It is important to note that none of Nutro's dry or 'kibble' pet foods contain wheat gluten and none are manufactured by Menu Foods."
  • Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care Kitten Chicken and Lamb 3 oz. cans were recalled, of any date of manufacture.
  • A dozen of the Nutro Max Cat Gourmet Classics canned varieties were recalled, regardless of date of manufacture.
  • All Nutro cat pouch products were recalled, including both Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care and Max Cat products.
The complete list of Nutro recalled products can be found on their site.

Because of the increasing scope of these pet food recalls, I continue to read all cat food labels and avoid all of those products with wheat gluten as an ingredient. I also continue to rotate Nutro Natural Choice products in my own cats' foods, as none of them include wheat gluten, with the exception of the one kitten food recipe that was recalled.
