My beloved orange tabby Sam passed away in August of 2009,at age 17 1/2. I was thoroughly devastated, and wasn't sure I would ever be ready to adopt again. But with my wife's help, I was able to grieve for Sam and put the worst of his passing behind me. Sam was a shelter kitty, and a fantastic cat, so it was natural for me to return there and look into helping another cat. My relationship with Sammers has forever endeared me to shelter cats. There's so many sweet cats that just need a good home!

I probably made 5 total visits to the local Humane Society, and I met a lot of really nice cats. One day I went in and saw Willie, and was immediately drawn to him, as I've always been partial to orange tabbies. He was a lot different than Sam physically, more like an Abyssinian, whereas Sam had a thicker, cobbier build. Willie is very cute, and has a lot of energy, and we figured he was about one year old at the time I adopted him.

I spent some time in the visiting room with him on two different occasions, and he seemed to be very affectionate, and VERY vocal. He also had that loud deep purr characteristic of orange tabbies, much like Sam had. That endeared me to him even more. He had already been at the shelter for a few weeks, and I knew it was likely his time there was nearing an end. I put him on hold and went home that night to sleep on it and talk it over with my wife. The next day I still felt good about things, so I went back, adopted him and took him home!

Willie is a character. High energy, athletic, very chatty, playful and curious. He's also sweet, affectionate, confident and bright. He's a joy to have around. I've always had a special affinity for cats, and Willie is no different. I just love them to death. It usually takes a while to bond with a new kitty, but putting in the time and effort is all worth it. After about 5 months now, Willie and I are at that point where we have a great relationship. Cats relax me, and I derive great joy from just watching and interacting with them. I like to think Willie benefits from his new loving home, and the excellent care he will get the rest of his life.

Willie was featured in our Adopted Shelter Cats section. It's always difficult to choose the last Cat of the Week for the month. As John said about shelter adoption, Willie was a natural choice for me, too. John's compassion and caring for cats is self-evident, and I predict many happy years together for them both.
