Stripes and Twinkie are both from the Fairbanks, Alaska, Animal Shelter. Twinkie was free. Last June 1 a friend and I planted the flowers at the Shelter. On June 9 we were supposed to have a freeze, so my friend and I had to go on Saturday evening (the sun was still shining) to cover the plants. A car drove around to the drop off door, two teenage girls tried to leave something small, but didn't.

They showed us what they were supposed to leave – a tiny black kitten that weighed one pound one ounce. The girls had been shopping in a mall and two children had come up to them, handed them the kitten, and then ran away. The girls' mother wouldn't let them keep the kitten so they took it to the Shelter. I looked at the little thing and said I would take it home and bring it back on Monday morning. Well, you know the rest of the story. We had to teach Twinkie how to eat and to drink. Now, of course, he consists only of black fur and attitude.
