Part 3 of a three part story about D'ni's rescue.

D'ni Picture 3

Treesh
In January 2003, we found a home for Sebastian and brought D'Ni inside. It took several tries before she would willingly stay in all night. Initially, she was so traumatized that she went limp on us. We could hold her and cuddle her. As she started feeling more comfortable in the house, she became too quick for us to scoop her up, and, to this day, she will not let us pick her up. During the day, she mostly hides in one of the cabinets in our living room. But, at night, in the darkness, when we go to bed, she comes up onto the bed and lets DH pet and snuggle her. Toward morning I usually hear her meowing, as if asking, if she could come up to my side. All I need to say is her name, and she rushes into the bedroom and jumps onto the bed.

Her integration into our household is not without problems. When D'Ni and our youngest cats, Gretel and Whidbey, reached social maturity, harmony in our house got seriously disrupted. Gretel and Whidbey started bullying D'Ni, who would exacerbate the situation by running and hiding. That just seemed to egg them on. Things are still not great, but we have a system going now. At night, we put Gretel and Whidbey in a separate room, letting D'Ni have free run of the house. The other three cats don't seem to be bothered by her.

The name D'Ni comes from the computer game Myst, and is pronounced “dunny.” She'll probably never be a tame cat, but we still love her.
