In my experience, adopted shelter cats and cats from rescues make the very best lifelong companions. Shelter cats may be facing a death sentence, or languishing in a cage for months on end. The odds are in favor of the cute kittens, but while they may readily find homes, the older cats are often left in the shadows. They may be the ones you'll see gazing forlornly from the back corner of their cages, or sometimes thrusting a hopeful paw through the cage bars.

Adopted shelter kittens and kittens from rescues can make the very best lifelong companions. During 'kitten season' shelters are overflowing with kittens to choose from. You can help free up shelter space for more needy cats by adopting two or more kittens. Share your adopted kitten photos and stories here.

Some people become kitten fosters by accident: feeding stray cats, finding an abandoned litter of kittens, or having a pregnant cat show up at their doorstep. Others may be introduced to fostering by working as a shelter volunteer, or volunteering for an "adoption day event," by a local feral cat rescue group. While it may be sad to give up a cat or kitten you've nurtured for weeks, it is a joyous event to see that baby go to a permanent loving home. Readers share here their kitten foster pictures and stories.

Volunteering for animal shelters and cat rescue groups is a terrific way for cat lovers to give cats in cages the love and attentive care they deserve. It's a meaningful part-time occupation for students as well as retired folks, and the personal rewards are richer than any financial compensation might be. It's also a good way to enjoy cats for people who can't have a personal feline companion.

Rescue is a vital part of TNR, because often some of the stray cats and their litters of kittens can be saved by fostering and then placing them in responsible permanent homes. Thus, TNR and rescue often go hand-in-hand. If you are active in TNR and/or rescue, you can do an added service for these cats by sharing your expertise here.
