Help for Giving Nasty-Tasting Pills to Cats

Raisins to the Rescue!

From Melody, for About.com

I wanted to share my method of giving my cat Amitriptyline, which has a very bad taste. The first two days involved a lot of foaming at the mouth, spitting out the pill, etc.

The best method I found was by sealing the pill (or even half a pill) inside a raisin, then dipping it in cat food juice for moisture so it could be more easily swallowed. My cat accepts this method with little to no fuss. I can even give doses two or three times a day. The dry, sticky inside of the raisin keeps the pill from breaking down too fast, which was a drawback of using things like meat or butter, etc. The softness and size of the raisin appear to be more palatable for swallowing compared to using stiff gel caps.

If not for this method I doubt I would be able to continue with the medication because giving it too her any other way caused her too much distress from the foul taste. I hope you can post this for other people to try, it may help them when trying to give medicine that tastes so awful and breaks down so quickly.

Guide Disclaimer: There has been a lot of recent discussion on the toxicity of grapes and raisins to dogs, when ingested in large quantities. Although many experts agree that one or two grapes pose no harm, always check with your own veterinarian before using raisins to disguise pills. See these articles for more information:
