Jim Willis Profile

By Franny Syufy, About.com

How Could You?:

Jim Willis is probably best known for his poignant essay, "How Could You?" which has been published in over 25 languages all over the world, and which has been called the most published animal-related essay in the world. A disc jockey in Canada literally stopped commute traffic with his tearful reading of "How Could You" over the air. "How Could You?" is one of the pieces in his first book, "Pieces of my Heart - Writings Inspired by Animals and Nature."

Jim has devoted his life to rescue of dogs, cats, horses, and wolves, and is a prolific writer and animal advocate, whose essays have been a source of inspiration to thousands of rescue workers, including the selfless souls who work in "kill shelters." His piece, "The Animals' Savior" hangs on the wall of many a humane shelter.

Although we have never met "in real life," I have corresponded with Jim for many years, and am grateful to call him my friend.
