Although for the most part of his life, Bubba was a healthy, robust cat, in later years inevitable medical problems arose. At 16, he was diagnosed with
hyperthyroidism, which sent us on a
roller-coaster ride that would last over two years. In June of 2004, when the Tapazole treatment seemed to be losing effectiveness, we opted for
radioactive iodine therapy Unfortunately, Bubba was the one cat in a hundred who went
hypothyroid as a result of the treatment. That diagnosis wasn't all bad, because Bubba soon put back a lot of the weight he had lost; his coat became glossy, his eyes were clear and bright. But the added weight exacerbated his arthritis, and we had him on a regimen of thyroxine, a thyroid supplement.
