Cool Yule Gifts and Stocking Stuffers for Holiday Cats

Don't Forget Grooming Tools for Relaxing Together on Winter Evenings

By , About.com Guide

When watching a cat play with toys the parents have as much fun with the toys as the cats do and with interactive toys, the humans can join in the fun. The winter holidays are no exception. Our furry 4-legged kids can enjoy in the holiday fun as much as their cat parents do with these great winter holiday gifts.

1. Mewvie Birdland Bonanza DVD

Does your kitty spend hours watching birds out the window, or lusting over the fish in your aquarium? Give him a change of pace with his own video, featuring featuring all kinds of luscious birds in their natural habitat, complete with outdoor sounds. One evening this holiday season, stock up on popcorn, hot cocoa, and catnip treats and spend an evening watching TV with your cat. My cats are absolutely mesmerized by the Mewvie video. Be sure to read my review.

2. Neko Flies

From the Amy Shojai, CABC review:

"The 'flies' are realistic, light weight, and move easily through the air. These are not "tug toys" but rather lures to entice your cat to chase and bat at the target. The designs vary from rather delicate looking bugs to sturdier mouse lures. My cat Seren went absolutely nuts for the toy!"

My cats love the Neko Flies too, and they're a great interactive toy. Super gift for your holiday cats!.

3. Pawbreakers, the Candy for Cats

Pawbreakers was an ingenious invention: high-quality catnip bound into a hard, edible ball, that is both a toy and a treat. My four cats love Pawbreakers, but the downside is that they may often be found cavorting with dust-bunnies under a sofa or refrigerator. Be sure to keep spares on hand.

4. Peek-a-Prize Toy Box

The most interesting aspect of this toy is that the cats' natural hunting and stalking instincts come into play. Their interest is not particularly in the "prey" (toys hidden inside the box), but in the thrill of the hunt. The floor soon became littered with toys flipped out of the box by one cat or another, and I was hard-pressed to keep retrieving them so the hunt could continue. This is a toy that cats will not grow tired of.

An interesting aside is that one day Jaspurr and Joey found a live mouse in our pantry and chased it out into our great room where the poor thing took refuge in their Peek-a-Prize toy box. This certainly added a whole new dimension to this toy: live prey. My readers will be happy to know that the mouse was rescued!

5. HealthyPaws Electric Pet Massager

I was admittedly a little skeptical about using this battery-operated pet massager on my cats. My initial technique was a little primitive, and sure enough, my Jenny jumped off the sofa and hid under the table at my first attempts.

My son took charge and used it on our three male cats, and they loved it. It's all in the technique, you see. I watched him use it on Jenny. He first gave her long, gentle strokes with his hand, which immediately calmed her down, then gradually alternated between hand strokes and strokes with the HealthyPaws massager. Jenny turned into butter with his strokes and purred up a storm.

The Healthy Paws requires on AA battery (not supplied).

6. FlutterBalls by SmartyKat

We originally purchased a card (they come three to a card) of FlutterBalls because of their enticing appearance. They are balls covered with an eye-catching animal print fleece cover, with a detachable feather section which gives them a very lifelike resemblence to real "prey," and the fiberfill stuffing gives them the bouncing action that cats love. Although they are great "play-alone" toys, they are more fun as interactive cat toys. You can toss them in the air and their fluttering downward fall and bounce is irresistible to cats.

7. Da Bird

Da Bird Interactive Toy for Cats
Da Bird is da toy with da most! It is by far the most mentioned commercial toy among About Cats Forum members and their cats, and is enthusiastically endorsed by my quartet of cat toy testers. The twirling feather action is so realistic, cats will go ballistic over Da Bird. You'll find that it's a good idea to put Da Bird away after play, or your cats will seek it out. marlborough, About.com Guest, gave Da Bird a 5-star rating. She wrote, "My cat, Sophie, loves da Bird with a real passion. She is crazy about chasing it around and jumping (and jumping and jumping)high up in the air to try to get the feathers."

8. Mylar Balls

Cats generally love shiny, crinkly toys, and a mylar ball provides hours of chasing, fun. If you are patient enough, your cat may even develop a game of chase and fetch with you. Like any other small toys, you'll want to buy a sufficient quantity of these inexpensive balls. Otherwise, they'll all end up under your refrigerator and/or bed!

9. Fling-ama-String by Moody Pet

Fling-ama-String got a 5-star rating by About.com Member,pinkrose1007. She writes:

"My cat is very picky when it comes to toys. I debated buying this toy for some time before I placed my order. I crossed my fingers after I hung it on my closet door and turned it on. In seconds my cat was all over it. He was actually playing with a toy that cost more than a few bucks. This toy has more than paid for it's self. My cat is now active, no longer gaining weight, and entertained for at least an hour on his own."

10. Yeowww! Catnip Toys

Yeowww! catnip toys are in high demand in our house. We almost always have three or four of them lying around in various stages of wear, and the cats compete over the ones fresh from the store. Yeowww! catnip is very potent, and cats find it irresistible. The scent lasts amazingly long, and I've found a few spins in a warm dryer refreshes them for a whole new round of play.

A Yeowww! catnip cigar or Banana would make a great stocking stuffer for your holiday cat.

11. Toy Mice

A cat can never be too sleek, too furry, nor have too many mice to play with. Your cat will spend many enjoyable hours batting them around, "killing" them, and losing them under your furniture.

As a general rule, I always remove any features that might be pulled off or swallowed, such as glued-on eyes, ears, and tails. The cats won't really care about the difference. Leather mice wear particularly well, but colorful fabric ones will also be popular, particularly if enhanced with catnip.

12. Music Cats Love: While You Are Gone

Keyboardist, composer Bradley Joseph may be best known for his work with Yanni and Sheena Easton. I have just recently received this CD, so its review is pending. However, after listening to the 14 tracks on the CD, I think it will bring mellow relaxation to anyone who listens, both human and feline.

It would make a great pre-holiday gift, to keep your cats company while you are out shopping.
