An important part of writing for any audience is giving them what they want to read. For that reason, statistics are a vital part of any writer's toolbox. I thought it would be fun to share the ten most-read articles and features on the About Cats site. Although this list is from one point in time, it is pretty representative of the mix from week-to-week.
This is the "site map" to About Cats. It includes most articles, features, and indexes on the site, and is cross-referenced for ease of use. You can find almost anything you might be looking for here.
Short descriptions of most recognized cat breeds, with links to more information on history, standards, and profiles. Many of the breed snapshots are illustrated with photos send by readers. Since there are presently no breeds in the final part of the alphabet, it might be more appropriately titled "A to T."
Since cats are svelte, sensual creatures, some photos of them lend themselves to equally sensual descriptions. Cat lovers have taken advantage of this to create pages of "kitty porn," which are pretty PG in nature. Our own "Centerfold Cats" section is the mildest of the bunch.
All cat aficionados love kittens - heck can anyone resist the appeal of a cuddle kitten. However, kittens are not just small cats. The care they receive in their first year is critical to their development and personality. The kitten care series gives you the tools you need for ensuring a long and happy life for your baby cat.
The cats photo calendar was started a couple of years ago after a forum member likened the colorful autumn colors of the tortoiseshell cat to the month of November. It just "grew" from there, and was originally called "Flavor of the Month." Each month is set aside for its own color, combination, or pattern of cats, and the calendar is growing each month, each year, with photos sent by readers.
At one time or another, we all were first-time cat "owners." Adopting a first cat is a hefty responsibility and brings with it a lifetime commitment of care and love, but the rewards are beyond price. These articles take the cat "newbie" from the decision-making process right through the exciting homecoming day. If you know anyone who is thinking of getting a cat, point them here.
Did you ever wonder what kind of cat you'd be if you suddenly woke up one morning and found yourself purring and covered with fur? That question inspired the first Cat Purrsonality Quiz, which was followed by two others (more to come.)
Did you know that all cats have tabby markings? The tabby pattern (there are several) is arguably the most popular one of all, among ailurophiles. Who can resist the "M" on the forehead,or the stripes, spots, or whorls of symmetry running down tabby's body and legs? Tabbies are my all-time favorite kind of cat. How about you?
All of the entertaining pages on About Cats, wrapped up in one index. It includes the Purrsonality Quizzes, the huge photo section, games, puzzles, and more. Bookmark this page for those moments when you need a little break from routine activities, or share it with a friend who loves cats.
Surprisingly enough, cat names are very high in search on the About Cats site, a phenomenon shared with baby names. Well, maybe not too surprising. After all, a name will be carried for life, making it an important decision. Did you name your cat after a person, a fictitious character, a song, a movie, or to reflect his or her personality or appearance? We cover the gamut with this feature.
