Music for Cats

Commercial Music for Cats' Relaxation and Enjoyment

By , About.com Guide

Amy Shojai, CABC wrote in her article, Cats Training: Music Therapy:

"Cats' training with music can help solve cat behavior problems. Our pet cats are attuned to sound and are incredibly sensitive to noises, including music. But what sort of tune gets Kitty's motor running?"

From my own files and further research, I've found a number of Music CDs and downloadable MP3s designed specifically for cats' (and humans') enjoyment, relaxation, and therapy. Although some other albums labeled "for cats" are just compilations of various symphonic pieces, those in this list were created for cats only.

Since I first became aware of this CD, I have been a fan of Cindy Mangsen. From my review From the story of Rudy's Big Adventure to the bittersweet song about Cats in the Coliseum, the Cat Tales CD album will bring smiles, chuckles, and a few tears to cat lovers and folk music lovers alike. I started tapping my toe with the first song, Meow (Cheryl Wheeler) and by the time the second song came on, I was looking for someone to dance with.

The CD contains 10 tracks, and running time is about 30 minutes.

Pet Pause: Wait for the Sunset

Amy Shojai likes this CD for its therapeutic value for pets. She says, "Therapeutic harp music helps relieve pain that drugs don’t help, soothes emotional upset, and has become of particular help in hospice situations for human patients. One of the pioneers, Susan Raimond, also promotes the therapeutic effect of harp music in animals. The sound of harp music calms fractious dogs and cats and offers almost a natural sedative effect so that the upset animals become quiet, lay down and go to sleep."

I first met C.H.U. (Clyde's Human Unit) by email shortly after I started writing about cats for About.com. Clydesight 2.0 is a marvelous web site with stories, music, puzzles - a virtual compendium of all those things which make life with the complexities of cats so entertaining. Tim, C.H.U.s alter ego composed Symphonia Felina shortly after Clyde's death in 1997. When my own cat, Shannon, died in 2001, Tim created a memorial symphony to Shannon. I still get goosebumps when I hear the string piccato running through the middle of the piece. At the time, Tim told me that it represented Shannon tripping through the house with joy, much as I remembered him.

David Teie, founder of Teyus, is the third generation of professional musicians, with impressive credentials of his own right. I have been most impressed with the work he is doing with the Smithsonian National Zoo in the development of species-specific music.

At the present time, three mp3 files are available for purchase/download at $1.99 each. You may also preview each of them before purchase. The CD has not yet been released for purchase, but at that time, I will update this page.

Keyboardist, composer Bradley Joseph may be best known for his work with Yanni and Sheena Easton. I have just recently received this CD, so its review is pending. However, after listening to the 14 tracks on the CD, I think it will bring mellow relaxation to anyone who listens, both human and feline.
