Cats Being Cats (At Their Very Best)

Although this feature attempts to give cats human-like attributes, as we humans are prone to do, please read it with a grain of salt. We all know that cats are at their very best when they are being themselves: wonderful, furry individuals, mysterious, elusive, and ever-changing. Here then are examples of proof that cats are sentient beings, surely as smart as humans, while retaining their catlike superiority.

Cici - The Cat That Came A Calling

Shortly after publishing the article about Sasha, the Cat Who Used Tools, Franny thought that other readers might have stories about their own tool-using cats. She was pleased when Grace rose to the challenge and submitted her own story about Cici, another cat who has converted human "tools" to her own needs. Cici learned how to knock on doors and flush the commode. She sounds like quite a kitty character!

Readers are encouraged to submit their own stories about tool-using cats, or other examples of observation, reasoning, and follow-through by cats to fulfill needs. If you have a story about a cat that you think will equal or exceed Sasha's and Misty's stories, please use the Article Submission form to submit it.

Cat Picture of the Week: Taz

Taz is three months old in this picture, which is when I adopted him. Taz was feral and part of a "community rescue effort" where the City was going to capture and destroy approximately 36 feral cats who were living around a boat ramp. I'm pleased to say I am lucky today to have my "Taz Man" as a companion. Taz was rescued by a wonderful assistant at my vet's office (Suzanne), and she took him home and cared for him and other rescued kitties until they were ready for adoption. I am happy to say that all 36 of the cats and kittens were rescued and found homes. Taz is absolutely the sweetest kitty...you would never know he had been wild. He is healthy and a very loving boy.

People who have hung around my site for awhile have probably caught on that I'm a sucker for a pretty face, and even more of a sucker for rescue stories. Taz captured my attention and my heart on both counts here. My Cats of the Week are selected from general photo submittals. Taz's photo was submitted for the 2008 Tuxedo Cats Gallery and is also featured there.

You may submit your own cat's photo, but you also must observe the Photo Submittal Guidelines.

New About.com Video with JJ Burkart

Love your cat, but hate to clean up his messy, stinky stains? Learn how to remove pet stains and odors quickly and easily so you no longer have to worry about occasional accidents.

Remember too, that trained cats do not avoid the litter box without cause. It may be too dirty, have a new litter that he doesn't like, or more importantly, he could have a urinary tract problem that is causing pain he associates with the litter box. Check out these resources before condemning him as a bad cat:

FAQ of the Day: How can I get rid of pet redeye in pictures of my cat?

While I am sure that no one would confuse me with a real photographer, I seem to have more than my share of red eyes in photos. It's caused, of course, because the flash reflects off the tapetum ludicum behind the cat iris; the slight downside of cats' ability to see so well in reduced light.

However, cat lovers all know that a cat is the sole owner of his or her household and every living being who resides in it. The typical cat will look at the household dog and think "Mine!", which should surprise no one.
