When, Where and How I Got My Red Cat
My husband and I adopted Sam from our local shelter when he was a tiny kitten. He was found under a house with no siblings or "parents" around. They believed him to be about 6-7 weeks old and feral. In his tiny cage, pushing a little plastic ball with a bell inside, he looked so forelorn! I noticed right away he was a polydactyl with extra toes on his front paws and he had big, huge golden/greenish eyes. They asked if we'd like to hold him - we did - we fell in love and took him home.
I'd Describe My Cat As…
Sam is very shy around everyone but my husband and me. He runs and hides in the basement when the doorbell rings. The only people who have been able to coax him out of the basement have been "cat people" who know how to treat a shy and nervous cat. He's very smart and enjoys playing games - some of which he "invented" with us. He was not hard to train at all...he loves learning new things, even at age 11. So far he has not had any medical problems although we know from our vet what to watch out for relative to signs he may be developing some of the typical "eldercat" issues.
Advice
- In actuality, my "advice for a prospective red cat adopter" is the same advice I'd give anyone adopting any color cat. Open your heart, don't adopt with pre-conceived ideas of what the cat will be - they will ALWAYS surprise you!
- Engage the cat in games that will challenge him and allow him to reach his potential.
- Most of all, love your cat for the very special creature that he is and enjoy every moment you have with him.
