When, Where and How I Got My Bengal Cat

I found a pet sitting ad on craigslist, "Watch my cat for 1 month" I thought it sounded good, so I replied, and agreed to watch him for one month, that was almost 2 years ago, and his original owner never came back for him.

I'd Describe My Cat As…

A total sweetheart, as long as you are nice to him. Every time he hears my key in the door, he comes running to meet me. On cooler nights, he will crawl under the covers with me and try to take up as much of the bed as he can, on warmer nights, he will sleep on top of the blanket either right next to my head, or on my feet. He is very territorial, my brother-in-law and I seem to be the only men he likes. I have been broken in to at least twice since I have had him, the first time I was sound asleep, and he came running into my room, the best I could describe it, howling, when that failed to fully wake me, he nipped at my nose to wake me. Another time, I was still awake when the person came in, and the intruder decided to take a swing at me, big mistake, Simba immediately sunk his teeth in to the mans leg, and tried to pull him away from me. He is very smart, which of course means he get into lots of trouble. The only health problems I have noticed so far is he seems to be allergic to something around my apartment, and without regular cortisol shots, he has been known to scratch & lick pretty bad sores in himself. He is very picky about the cleanliness of his litter box, and has been know to poop on the floor if it isn't clean enough for him. I know he is only doing it to punish me, because he has never urinated on the floor. I try to keep him on a more natural diet, (I don't think and cat should have food with corn as the first, or any, ingredient) he seems to love it.

Advice

  • His urine is quite strong smelling, so be ready to clean the litter box often
  • He seems to hate all other animals, it may just be him, but I would guess that a Bengal should probably be the only pet in the house.
  • He has lots of social aggression toward people he doesn't know very well

What an amazing story, not only by the "adoption" circumstances, but also Simba's self-appointed "guard cat" propensities.
