When, Where and How I Got My Devon Rex Cat

I came across him quite by accident. I had always wanted a pure bred cat, but didn't care much for Persians because of all the hair. Looked in the paper and there was an ad for Devon Rex kittens. Researched and liked the fact that the breed is active, not a sloth! But I knew the challenges right off the bat. The breeder had 2 kittens left, both males. She had a fishing pole toy and dangled it in front of them both. My guy grabbed it and pulled, and pulled, and pulled. He was so tenacious! He wouldn't let go! Reminded me so much of my oldest child that I couldn't pass him up. He went home with me that day.

I'd Describe My Cat As…

He has never met a stranger! He is so dog like. He loves to fetch. Yes, he brings the toys back. He walks on a leash. He loves to go in the car. Never screams and meows like other cats when he goes for a ride. Greets me at the door every night. Sometimes, I come home and he has opened every single closet door in the house! Guess he got bored. He loves to explore and I've been known to "catch" him a bug and bring it inside just so he could hunt it. He loves to "explore and greet" everyone who comes to my house which makes it difficult for people that don't like cats. But usually if they don't like him, then I don't like THEM! He even sits still (most of the time) when I give him a bath and clip his nails. My concerns... That because he is so odd looking and people are enchanted with his personality, that someday, someone might decide to steal him. Also, he loves the outdoors and has bolted out the door on occasion. He is microchipped, but unlikely that anyone would turn him in. Yes, he was expensive. But the joy and companionship he has brought me far exceed the "cost".

Advice

  • This breed is not for everyone. It's true that he has a very unique personality and he follows me from room to room.
  • But he isn't for people who don't want a cat to be seen or heard. He is pretty much in your face most of the day. He is a high attention pet.
  • Not grooming wise, since he has little hair and doesn't shed at all. But he thrives on attention. He loves affection, but usually it has to be "his idea". He is very independent and will let you know what he likes and doesn't like.
  • He seems to elicit two responses from others: they either like or dislike him. Most are curious because of his looks.
