When, Where and How I Got My Devon Rex Cat

I am REALLY allergic to cats. We moved to a new town and our neighbors had two Devons. We were invited to dinner and (as always) both cats decide to climb on the person with allergies. I explained that I was allergic. My neighbors informed me that they were hypoallergenic. I played for awhile with them and sure enough I was fine!

I contacted the breeder (after keeping an eye on petfinder.com for awhile to see if any would become available on my area).

The breeder named my first guy "Rascal" since that is what he was! We decided he needed a brother, so we went on a wait list and got Jackson a few months late

I'd Describe My Cat As…

Loveable Crazies! They love to climb, be in high places, run across the tops of curtins and chase things - bottle caps, corks and Q-tips are favorite toys. They love to cuddle, sleep with me at night, they walk on a leash, love to ride in their pet running carriage, watch birds at the birdfeeders and chipmunks picking up the scraps.

The neighbor's dog visits nightly and they sit nose to nose sniffing each other through the screen. I did make the mistake of letting the dog in one day and Rascal attacked the poor thing (who was three times his size).

They are small cats. They get to be between 6 and 8 pounds. They don't shed. Their fur is very soft (like a sheep), they are quite vocal talking to us and each other, they always greet us at the door when we come home.

They love to eat. I used to keep the dry food in the kitchen cabinet until we woke up a few weeks ago and found Jackson locked inside the cabinet, food bag ripped open and half of it consumed! We only caught him because he couldn't get out! I tried duck taping the cabinet the next night, but he still got in... We had to childproof lock the trash barrel because he was climbing inside at night and eating whatever he could find! Even cucumber peels.

They are very smart cats. I then out the food inside of a plastic tupperware container. They figured out that if they worked together they could push it off the counter onto the floor where most likely it would pop open and spill food all over the floor!

They always have us laughing. They dive and jump for bottle caps, doing somersaults in the process. They chase each other around the house, taking turns on who chases who. It sounds like galloping horses! We find them in high up places and sometimes can't figure out how they got up so high.

Advice

  • Get two, they can be needy and don't like to be left alone.
  • Don't leave food out, they tend to over eat.
  • Keep them as indoor cats.
