When, Where and How I Got My Cat

Katy was a feral kitten in Texas when she adopted my son. He was in the army at Ft. Hood, and one day she showed up at his apartment. He put out dishes of milk, which she drank and then split.

After a couple of weeks, one day he opened the door and in she came.

He brought her home to NY at discharge, at about 8 months old, where she has TOTALLY taken over this house. (Dogs have Masters, Cats have Staff!!)

I'd Describe My Cat As…

Somewhat aloof. She is definitely NOT a "Lap Cat" , but she finally trusts us enough to lay on her side to get rubbed, and occasionally rolls over on her back to get her belly rubbed. The "back gig" only lasts for a brief time. Only began doing this a couple of weeks ago.

She is an indoor/outdoor cat. Once she wants out, she makes your life miserable until you let her out. She's like a child, though. In and out, in and out, grab a bite, back out, etc.

Being feral, she has every disease a cat can have, but the Vet is quite impressed with her. We get her checked out every 6 months, to be safe.

Advice

  • Get a shelter cat. They will take care of the spay/neuter stuff, and have the cat checked out.
  • It is a BIG responsibility, so make sure you are up for it, BEFORE you get the cat, not after.
  • Get a book or 2 on cats, read up BEFORE you get one.
  • Shop around for a VET. At least annual checkups should be performed.
  • Every cat is unique, with a personality all its own. Learn it and work with it.
