When, Where and How I Got My Maine Coon

My kittens were 15 weeks old when I picked them up from the breeder. They are brown tabbies with white bibs and feet. We gave them Christmas-like names since they were born 12/27. Tasha is from Natasha which comes from Nativity; Crockett is an "occupational" name and references the shepherds crook. I researched my breeder on the Internet and attended many cat shows before selecting her. I was on her waiting list for about 3 months before my kittens were born. Tasha & Crockett have learned several tricks including "gimme a kiss" "high 5" and "up". Our next challenge is leash training and meowing on command.

I'd Describe My Cat As…

Gentle Giant is a perfect description of my kittens...especially Crockett. He is 18lbs now; Tasha is smaller around 12lbs. They are pretty easy to train and respond well to treats. Both kittens follow me around the house as I do my chores and get along with both visitors to our home and our 11 year old chocolate lab. I would highly recommend getting siblings if you can. They are wonderful with each other and delightful to watch as they zoom around and chase each other. Crockett is a lap sitter however he never stays long - I think because he gets too hot with all his long fur. Tasha is a lover and snuggler and loves to chase anything that moves. They are truly beautiful and everyone who sees them raves about their bushy tails, cute ear tuffs and showshoe feet.

Advice

  • Check out your breeder and visit her facility.
  • Meet the mom cat and dad cat if you can.
  • Travel to cat shows and talk to breeders; your breeder will be your advisor all your kitten's life.
  • If you can afford it, get siblings.
  • Maine Coon cats are a wonderful, stunning breed!
