When, Where and How I Got My Maine Coon

5 years ago, I got Biscuit from a Michigan breeder, Kinneycoons. Seven months later, I bought his full-blood baby brother, Muffie. Biscuit recognized his little brother the moment I brought him in the door. He sneaked past me and leapt up on the bed to groom the little guy and raise him right. Biscuit is "blue;" Muffie is "red and cream." They are perfectly compatible with each other, but totally different. I bought both cats as kittens and brought them home at 12 weeks.

I'd Describe My Cat As…

Biscuit loves me to surround him and kiss him for a long time. When I try to give him his vitamins, he puts his head on my ankle and stretches out, expecting a brushing. He is a bit manipulative, but, for once I love it. Muffie is love. He offers himself to be petted all over, hiding his head in my chest. Both cats sleep with me. Muffie sings me to sleep (he lies by my head); Biscuit wakes me up with head butts and kisses. When I exercise, Muffie runs under me and expects to be kissed as he rushes by. Both cats play with my students, many of whom come more for the cats than to learn French. They can't believe how magnificent, soft, and sweet these cats are. They have no medical problems anymore because I give them vitamins every day. Training? I thought they trained me!

Advice

  • Be sure you don't feed him cat food, especially the junk that comes in a can. And be sure what he does eat is the best protein you can find. I use baby food (Gerber's), Kosher Turkey breasts (they have no chemicals), and steak. I avoid fish because it has so many chemicals in it.
  • Be sure that if you're going to give him treats, you limit him to 1/4 scoop a day of an expensive dry food like California Natural or Wellness Core. DON'T feed him actual treats. The carbs will kill him.
  • Be patient. It takes 5 years before a cat begins to trust you completely.

There are many fine cat foods that come in cans, and are designed to meet cats nutritional needs.
