When, Where and How I Got My Maine Coon

We got Drake from a breeder in Derry, PA. Drake came to live with us when he was 12 weeks old and was the runt of the litter. He also had a kink in his tail, which the breeders vet believed happened in utero.

I'd Describe My Cat As…

Drake is very laid back, but can be very stand-offish at times. He tolerates my three year old daughter, but would rather not have anything to do with her. He's really a ladies man. He is all over any female that comes into the house. He's a protector of me. The entire time I was pregnant, he was not more than an arm length away from me. He's a great cat.

Drake has HCM which we discovered initially at his 2yr check up as a heart murmur. If your cat is EVER diagnosed with a heart murmur, immediately find a cardiologist for your cat. Trust me. We did not and our pocket books learned a valuable lesson. We took Drake to my MIL's vet b/c he does ultrasounds. Big mistake. 6 months later Drake was knocking at death's door. He was drowning in his own fluid. A night @ E-vets, an e-visit to his regular vet and 2 trips to the wonderful folks at the Virginia Tech vet school (Dr. Abbott ROCKS), Drake is a success story. He still has a enlarged artery, but is on Enalpril every day, and makes a yearly trip to Dr. Abbott and his students. He's loved by every Vet student he meets, the staff at our vets office and our WONDERFUL cat only Vet, Dr. Andersen. Drake's been through allot with me, my engagement, my marriage, 3 moves,the birth of my daughter...through it all, he's remained my faithful companion. Though we may have our differences (namely clipping his nails), he's the best cat anyone could ever ask for.
