When, Where and How I Got My Cat

January of 2010, NC from a breeder, drove down to pick her out and ended up getting two! They're stepsisters one month apart.

I'd Describe My Cat As…

Curious, very intelligent, elegant, unique and beautiful. My wegies are loving and great companions plus tons of entertainment, but not for someone who does not have the time or energy to devote to them. I have almost taught one to fetch, her favorite toy is an empty contact lens case and she will trash-pick to get one and run off with it! Another favorite is a ball of tin foil or Saran wrap which they will bat around the house for the longest time. Maddie has learned to open the birdcage so I must wire it closed! They are fearless and are fascinated with everything that moves and especially my mixer and printer. Maddie will sit on the counter and watch me make something as if she's memorizing my ingredients and measurements! They need some supervision and a babyproofed house for sure, and people who have plenty of energy to play with and clean up after them! They are a constant joy and give us unconditional love in return. Everywhere I go, they go. They are both sleeping on the printer as I type, but will jump up and follow if I leave the room. They aren't needy, prissy, or high maintenance, but they are rather high energy...when not napping that is! Mine generally nap between noon and 5 minimum and love to play from about 4am, always making sure I know they're up with a swat at the blinds over my bed or a meow in my face.

Advice

  • Like the Maine Coon, this breed does have an issue with HCM, a heart condition. Be sure to ask the breeder if there is HCM in the lines of a kitten, and specifically what the results of both parents were, so they know that you know about HCM or hypercardiomyopathy, a thickening of the wall of the heart that can be present from birth or show up much later, often fatal. Do your homework first, and you can't go wrong with this wonderful breed for your family too - and two together are better than one alone!
