When, Where and How I Got My Tabby

A few months after my No. 1 cat Sadie Mittens died at 17 I began wishing I had another cat.

My daughter found an ad on Craigslist for an 11-week-old orange tabby kitten in a nearby town. I e-mailed the woman and arranged to go see her the very next day. When we arrived she brought down a lean little fellow who had no objections to being held by a stranger and just laid my daughters arms and looked around curiously. The lady said she had taken him in from outside when he was 2 weeks old. He had had some eye trouble, but he was fine now.

I'd Describe My Cat As…

Alan is very sociable, energetic and playful. He loves to chase and pounce on the other cats, who are much older. Sometimes you can see him debating whether he really wants to tackle one of them -- he'll start to go, then stop himself a couple times. Being still mostly a kitten, he prefers running and playing to being held at all, but recently he's started mellowing and coming over to be held and petted occasionally. Since he is a pleasant, sociable guy, I suspect that as he gets older, he'll have a little more time for us big people. His eyes are very slightly different colors. The vet says there's nothing wrong, but occasionally he'll move his head around while looking at something as if he can't quite focus. It doesn't stop him, though, so since the vet says the eye is healthy, it doesn't worry me. It's just his little quirk.

Advice

  • Be prepared to recharge or replace the batteries in your camera a lot. Tabbies are adorable from all angles.
