What led me to adopting a shelter cat
My husband and I were stationed in Spain with the US Navy and the base had an animal shelter. He had pets growing up but I never did. Not interested in committing the time necessary to care for a dog, we agreed to bring a cat into our home for companionship and love. There was never a question about adopting from a shelter vs. purchasing from a breeder. We would be happy with any cat that chose us.
How many visits did you make before adopting?
I went once (outside of visiting hours) to see the cats before bringing my husband to visit the cats I liked best. We explored the enclosures together. Pia was in an enclosure with two Siamese-mix cats. I liked one of the white cats, and Pia seemed a bit shy and did not approach us at first. Then she approached my husband, lay down, stretched out and let him rum her belly. That was all it took...she was such a trusting cat with sweet but wary disposition. We put a $50 deposit on her and brought her home for a week (the shelter policy for prospective adopters). The very next day I went back and told them we were sure we wanted to keep her and they could convert our deposit into her adoption fee.
Advice
- After fostering kittens, we knew our lifestyle was better suited to adult cats. Kittens are the cutest things ever, but their boundless energy and razor-sharp claws are too much for my everyday life. Assess your needs and lifestyle before deciding on a cat or kitten.
- I had allergic reactions to all the cats I'd been exposed to, and committed to allergy pills and/or shots before adopting. I wasn't going to let an allergy keep me from becoming a cat owner! Allergy symptoms have now subsided or disappeared altogether, even in multi-cat homes of friends and family.
My Cat's Name and Age at Adoption
We think Pia is a dog in a cat's body. She's waiting at the door when we come home and greets all human guests without hesitating, she comes when called and responds to the "venga!" command ("come!" in Spanish), she loves to have her belly rubbed and prefers to be with us rather than alone.
The Mutual Bond I Share With my Cat
Pia's vocalizations sound almost human; sometimes I think we're communicating! She keeps me company when I'm knitting but sits on my chair & doesn't mess with the yarn. Mu husband & I have no kids; Pia is the only family we want: dependent but not needy, affectionate but not clingy; perfect for us
Significant Benefits of our Relationship
My husband's Navy job is stressful but he relaxes much faster when Pia's in his lap. She lays on my chest when I'm going to sleep and her purring helps me drift off. I feel safe with her in the house
Why I'd Do It All Over Again
Adult cats take longer to find forever homes.
The right cat will let you know when she finds the right owner.
We wanted to give love and care to a special cat.
