What led me to adopting a shelter cat

I have always adopted shelter cats and have been involved in cat rescue for about 40 years. Another rescuer told me that the municipal shelter was about to euthanize a large group of cats and asked rescuers to help save them. I said I would help and Simon was one of the cats sent to my rescue. I still can't believe that this precious cat was about to lose his life. He is the sweetest, gentlest cat. He loves other cats and people. From the first time we met we had a bond. He came to me the night my beloved Shimi passed at age 19. I needed Simon every bit as much as he needed me. I call him Shimi's gift to me.

How many visits did you make before adopting?

none really, my cat came to me as a rescue from death row. He was one of the cats who came into my rescue on the day they would have been killed. I just knew this little cat needed to be in a safe place. Once I met him, I saw just what a special cat he was. Poor baby had just been neutered, had a bad cold and was skinny and malnourished and when I got him out of his carrier, he wrapped around my neck like a scarf. He still likes to curl around my neck to sleep. I call him my Scarf.

Advice

  • Shelter cats are the best cats. Look at all the cats, let your heart be your guide. Don't decide in advance that you have to have one gender or the other or a certain coat color or fur length. Look at each cat as an individual, see the cat within. There will be a cat or cats who looks deep into your eyes and when you look back, you know that cat is meant for you.

My Cat's Name and Age at Adoption

Simon is loving, gentle and funny. He loves to cuddle with me and with his "brother" Cattail. If he finds something that interests him, he meows to tell me and Cattail to look what he found.

The Mutual Bond I Share With my Cat

Simon and I got together on what would have been the last day of his life and on what was the last day of my beloved cat Shimi's life. Simon was such a scrawny little mess of a cat with a runny nose and runny eyes. He saw me sad and wrapped himself around my neck and licked my tears away.

Significant Benefits of our Relationship

He can make the worst time bearable, he can always make me smile with his cute personality and gentle ways.

Why I'd Do It All Over Again

How could I not take this gentle loving boy home? The idea of this sweet cat being euthanized is horrible. I can't imagine missing out on having him be a part of my life.
