How I Came About to Adopt This Cat

I was at my local Petsmart at Christmas time shopping for presents for my dog and I decided to go take a look at the shelter cats on display in the back of the store to pass some time. A volunteer was in the room and had Charlie (named Amigo at the time) out. I went in and met him and he seemed very depressed like he had lost all hope. I noticed that he stood out from the other cats because he had a unique look and luxurious long hair. I left the room and couldn't get him out of my mind. I continuously brought his profile up on Petfinder over and over again and finally decided I had to have him. The rest is history...

Why I Think my Cat Deserves This Title

Charlie couldn't have come to me at a better time in my life. I was about to graduate from graduate school and move across country for a job. I was quite scared and sad to leave my family and friends. However, he is quite buddy. Before, during and after the move he was and is a loving, calming companion. He gets along with everyone. If I am ever having a bad day, he senses my emotions and lays on my lap or brings a toy to distract me or remind me what's important in life. He has been quite flexible with adapting to my hectic lifestyle, including earning his own frequent flyer miles for when we make trips back home. He has come a long way since that cage at Petsmart. His recent accomplishments include: learning commands, such as come, sit and get it. I have a little prodigy on my hands!

Advice

  • Visit your local shelters multiple times to see which cats you form a connection with (or wait and see who chooses you!).
  • Don't overlook the cats that don't come to visitors in the shelter, sleep a lot and look disheartened. In the right environment and lots of love, they will come out of their shells and be completely different cats.
  • Look into cats that are FIV+ as there are many false rumors about this disease and they are great companions.
