Advice for Beginners
Volunteer for a rescue group so you can learn from people who know how to foster cats and kittens. These people know what works. They will give you supplies and also pay for the spay/neuter and usually will administer the shots themselves.
Most Rewarding Aspects of Fostering
In a very small way, I can make a difference in the world, where pet population is out of control. I can't save them all, but I can help a few. I can make sure these kittens are spayed and neutered. I also have created friendships with the adopted kittens owners and I receive pictures on email.
Saddest Aspects of Fostering
Definitely, when they are old enough to be adopted and they leave my protective, warm, loving home. Our rescue group screens applicants, but one really never knows the life the kitten will lead.
Temptation to Keep Cats and/or Kittens
I've been very tempted to keep the kittens but I have four cats of my own, who I do not want to neglect. I'd rather foster, which is a huge help to the cat or kittens and also for the rescue group.
How I became a foster parent to cats and/or kittens
I was in the right place at the right time for the first set of kittens. A vet found them on her doorstep one morning. This year, I have a set of feral kittens that were in a friends garage. Feral kittens bring a whole new dimension to fostering and the time commitment. I have faith that I can help these 4 week old babies to trust me, then learn to trust others. It's a long road. In about a week, I will trap the mommy cat that was left and have her spayed. She's had many sets of kittens, now it's her turn to live a better life.
How I learned to care for my foster cats & kittens
I've had the help of other rescue group volunteers, mostly. They've given me supplies, taught me how to syringe feed, how to keep the kittens warm. I've also learned a lot online. There is a wealth of information online and also some very caring, dedicated people. Knowing that I can connect with people who are like minded when it comes to loving cats and protecting them is invaluable. When I find that a cat has a certain symptom, I immediately look online to research and become informed.
Lessons learned
- Well, I'd like to say that I've learned not to get attached but that would be a lie.
- One thing is, to keep track of all money spent and to keep the receipts for tax purposes. Anything spent is a donation.
- This second time around, I've really considered where I am in my life and if I could reasonably foster kittens again. Since I know what to expect, it has made the decision much more real.
- I have the support of my family, too, which is a huge help.
