I make no bones about my fondness for Tabby's Place. It is a sanctuary for special needs cats - cats that were literally snatched from death row and brought to a wonderful state-of-the-art shelter for rehabilitation, medical treatment, and loving care by staff members, volunteers, and visitors alike. If not adopted, each of them has a home for life here. If you have a favorite shelter, share your experiences here. Do you volunteer? All the better. Share how it makes you feel. Cat Shelters

The very best cat shelter I have ever seen is Catman II in Cullowee, NC. Run by Hap Sims and his wife, Kay, I have never seen cats in a shelter so happy, clean and well cared for. They have devoted their lives and a great deal of their money to cats who would otherwise not have a chance and make sure they are neutered, have all shots and any medical attention they need. In my book, they are saints. In addition, he is absolutely honest in placing cats. If the cat has any problems or he doesn't think it will fit into your family, he will tell you so unequivocally. Anyone interested in cats in the North Carolina area should certainly check with him. The phone number is 828-293-0892.

Malcolm Cat Protection Society, Cyprus

My Husband and I travel to Cyprus every year and we visit the incredibly dedicated people at Malcolm Cat Protections Society every time. Imagine taking care og up to 200 cats in the summer heat of Cyprus! And there is no smell! How they manage that feat in that heat is beyond me! It's a voluntary jobb and they rely on charity and donations. They have a small charmingly untidy gift shop and we always leave with at least to bags of "cat-stuff"; T-shirts, mugs, mousepads, CD-holders etc. The place is so clean, the people so very nice and the cats so amazing. It's almost surreal to be surrounded by so many cats! The last time we visited we got a "personal guide". A small, thin but healthy tabby that followed us around rubbing into our legs and nudging us on The Tour. ;0) If you go to Cyprus and love cats, visit them. They're located right outside Limasol. Do not mistake it for the nunnery. According to the locals, the nuns doesn't take very good care of the cats, unfortunately. K., Norway

Animal Shelter, A.C. in Chapala, Jalisco

My favorite is the Animal Shelter, A.C. in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. It was founded by an expat after the old humane society disintegrated. The cat manager, Barb, says the cat or kitten should pick you so she has potential adopters go into the large cage and sit for a while to get to know the felines. She's entirely correct - a cat or kitten will gravitate to a certain individual and not to others. All incoming cats/kittens are segregated, given FELV testing and exams before being placed in with the others so they are healthy when adopted. The Animal Shelter has a pet shop where they sell food, litter and other pet supplies to support the shelter and has no other fund-raising activities; they do, of course, gladly accept donations.

Friends For Life Rocks!

I was just muddling along , going to work, feeding stray cats and worrying about all those who are homeless. Wanting to volunteer but too afraid of the heartaches of watching cats and dogs die at our local "humane " society. Then Lo and Behold ! No Kill Adoption and Compassion Center opened a shelter right in my neighborhood in Houston, Texas ! It's a happy and hopeful place filled with fur-babies of all sizes, ages and with varying medical needs. The dogs are fostered out but most of the cats live on site or at a satellite location. We have great volunteers and an amazing staff and we spoil our little friends whenever possible. FFL has a pretty good adoption rate despite an extremely strict adoption process ( these are our babies after all !). Every animal that is admitted into the program stays until a very good home is found. Volunteering at this sanctuary has given me a new purpose in life - I wake up glad to greet the day! http://www.nokill1.org/

SPIN..

While I LOVE the foster agency that rescued my vowels, I have to say I really love SPIN (Stray Pets In Need), in Natick, MA. The shelter is in a local, family-owned pet store. And the thing that makes me love it the most, besides the fact that it is no-kill, and that they have the kitties in a huge cage that spans an aisle, and has lots of cat trees, and there are old cats there too, is that it was started by an Animal Control Officer. She didn't like the alternatives she had, and so she started a no-kill shelter!

Tabbys Place Is Awesome!

We live in NJ about 30 miles from Tabbys Place. I read about the plans for Tabbys Place in our local newspaper and followed its progress through several years. We were present at the grand opening in October 2003. What a wonderful day that was. We visit often and have sponsored several cats over the years. Our latest is Tashi -a parapelegic kitten. Tabbys Place is fantastic!

Tabby's Place is Awesome!

I heard about Tabby's Place on the Cats forum, and I have sponsored a number of special needs cats. I am currently sponsoring a feisty geriatric cat named Hillary, who reminds me a lot of my old girl Raleigh. I get progress reports and pictures each month, so I feel like I know her. Every contact I've had with the staff, including Jonathan himself, has been wonderful.
