Wheat Gluten Manufacturer and Distributor Revealed

Wednesday April 4, 2007
In a somewhat less than forthright maneuver, in the FDA's press conference on March 30th, representative refused to disclose the name of the manufacturer of the contaminated wheat gluten. On that same date, buried as an "import alert" the name of the company was revealed:

Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology
Development Company Ltd.
Wangdian Industrial Zone,
Peixian, CN-32, China 22162

On April 2nd, ChemNutra Inc., of Las Vegas, Nevada, recalled all wheat gluten it had imported from one of its three Chinese wheat gluten suppliers: Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd., as revealed by the FDA in a Press Release dated April 3, 2007. The press release goes on to say:
ChemNutra shipped from its Kansas City warehouse to three pet food manufacturers and one distributor who supplies wheat gluten only to the pet food industry. ChemNutra's shipments commenced November 9, 2006 and ended March 8, 2007. ChemNutra did not ship to facilities that manufacture food for human consumption, and the distributor ChemNutra shipped to supplies wheat gluten only to pet food manufacturers. The total quantity of Xuzhou Anying wheat gluten shipped was 792 metric tons. (My emphasis.)
On April 2nd, ChemNutra sent recall notices to all four of its direct customers. It is unknown to me if those four companies are the same as the four companies whose earlier food recall press releases are linked from the FDA site:

My cat has now been diagnosed with acute renel failure of unknown cause. Not bacterial or viral or congenital. The only food product that I know of that has wheat glutin is the Iams wet pouches that I feed only one to her 2 days before the initial recall and the lot is unknown because I thru the pouch out and Whiska Lickens treats from Purina, but these are not on recall. Since Pounce was recalled what are the chances of other treats that have not been Identified? Or did I have a bad pouch of wet food and it only took that one to affect her 2 weeks later?

Chris says: >>>I thru the pouch out and Whiska Lickens treats from Purina, but these are not on recall.<<<

It's actually "Whisker Lickens," and this product does contain wheat gluten: Animal digest, wheat flour, corn gluten meal, water, chicken by-product meal, wheat gluten, animal fat. Although it wasn't recalled, I'd personally play it safe and stop feeding any cat food containing wheat gluten. I've listed my own top picks of several types of cat foods here NONE of them contain any wheat gluten, tainted or otherwise.

I would suggest staying with products for our pets that are manufactured in the US & there are some. I only feed my dogs Canidae dry & wet. There are others. So sorry for those that have sick or pets that have died. Pets are family. Thanks Fran for all you have done on this recall.

I am not currently a cat owner, but hope to be again soon. My question relates to the “wheat gluten scare”. I make my own whole wheat bread and use wheat gluten in the recipe. I understand that commercial versions of wheat bread contain wheat gluten as it is required to make the bread rise. What health risk am I taking in consuming this stuff?

(8) Liz says:

The wheat gluten you most often find in the grocery store under the name “Vital Wheat Gluten” is made in the US. Some baking goods companies (like King Arther) sell wheat gluten in bulk from Germany. As far as I’ve been able to determine, none of the companies selling wheat gluten for home baking are buying it from China.

As far as commercially manufactured “bread” is concerned, it’s as hard to determine what is in it and where it came from as anything else on the market today. Eat at your own risk.
