Merrick PetCare.com sent me a box containing a small packet of Merrick Purrfect Bistro Healthy Adult Chicken, two 3 ounce cans of Merrick Purrfect Bistro food varieties, two bamboo serving plates, a bamboo serving utensil, and a large fabric cloth or napkin. The package also contained a blue cat collar with a pearl and a little dangle. I will not use this, as it is not a breakaway collar.

My Office Assistant cat, Jennifur aka Jenny, observed with interest as I opened the package and removed the test samples. She was particularly interested in the scent of the dry food in the clear plastic package.

Review of Merrick Purrfect Bistro Healthy Adult Chicken Dry

Merrick has long produced grain-free cat foods. Now it is expanding that group with the new line of Purrfect Bistro. Some of the highlights of the new recipes:

  • Real deboned named meat as the number one ingredient
  • 38% protein in the kibble (minimum)
  • 100% grain free
  • High levels of omega 6 + 3 fatty acids
  • No poultry by-product meals
  • No ingredients from China

I am sure the last statement will bring relief to many readers who have had cats sicken or die from tainted cat foods which were subsequently recalled, many of which contained ingredients from China.

In addition to the Healthy Adult Chicken, the new line includes Healthy Adult Salmon, Healthy Weight, Healthy Kitten, and Healthy Senior.

Ingredients of Healthy Adult Chicken:

The following ingredients are included in this cat food:

Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Dried Potato, Peas, Potato Protein, Natural Flavor, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), Sweet Potato, Powdered Cellulose, Ground Flaxseed, Dried Egg Product, Dried Whey Protein Concentrate, Chicken Liver, Cranberries, Flax Oil (source of Omega 3 fatty acids), Organic Alfalfa, Phosphoric Acid, Salt, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement, Biotin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate), Minerals (Zinc Amino Acid Complex, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Amino Acid Complex, Manganese Amino Acid Complex, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Amino Acid Complex, Sodium Selenite), Choline Chloride, Taurine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Rosemary Extract, Bacillus Coagulans, Dried Lactobacillus plantarum fermentation product, Dried Lactobacillus casei fermentation product, Dried Enterococcus faecuim fermentation product, Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product.

Note:"No Grain" does not mean "no carbohydrate," and the dried potato, peas, and sweet potato all contain carbyhydrates, which should be taken into consideration with diabetic cats. Unfortunately, pet food manufacturers are not required to list percentage of carbohydrates on labels, and protein and fats are listed as "minimum," so although we know the minimum percentage of protein, we do not know the maximum percentage of fat.

Jenny's Taste Test

Since the small bag contained a minimal amount of the dry food, and Jenny hadn't eaten for three hours, she tucked into it and ate the whole package in just about ten minutes. Apparently it tasted pretty good to her.

Based on the ingredients and Jenny's obvious approval of the flavor, I'd rate this particular flavor of Purrfect Bistro with 4 1/2 stars.

Purrfect Bistro proved two three-ounce cats of food:

Review of Chicken Paté

The ingredients in the canned Chicken Paté seemed wholesome, for the most part:

Deboned Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Dried Egg Product, Natural Flavor, Cranberries, Calcium Carbonate, Organic Alfalfa, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Carrageenan, Guar Gum, Sodium Phosphate, Salmon Oil, Minerals (Zinc Amino Acid Complex, Iron Amino Acid Complex, Manganese Amino Acid Complex, Copper Amino Acid Complex, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Glucoheptonate, Sodium Selenite), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Niacin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate), Taurine, Choline Chloride, Yucca Schidigera Extract.

It is important to note that Merrick's food cans do not comtain any BPA linings. When a representative of TruthAboutPetFood.com emailed Merrick about BPA lining, the response was: "Thanks for taking the time to e-mail us, none of our cans contain BPA (Bisphenol A). They are tin coated steel (inside and outside) with an organic coating over the tin on the inside of the can.” When questioned about the large cans “Does this include the large cans as well?” they responded “This includes the large cans as well.”

My Jenny, who has been a dry food addict her whole life, readily ate the whole can, and gave it a five-star approval.

Review of the Beef Wellington Flavor

The Beef Wellington flavor is not a paté. Rather, it is similar to the "bits and juice packets" of wet cat food. The ingredients are:

Deboned Beef, Beef Broth, Chicken Liver, Deboned Chicken, Peas, Dried Egg Product, Potato Protein, Natural Flavor, Dried Potato, Cranberries, Ground Flaxseed, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Carrageenan, Guar Gum, Powdered Cellulose, Dried Whey Protein Concentrate, Sodium Phosphate, Salmon Oil, Minerals (Zinc Amino Acid Complex, Iron Amino Acid Complex, Manganese Amino Acid Complex, Copper Amino Acid Complex, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Glucoheptonate, Sodium Selenite), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Niacin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate), Taurine, Choline Chloride, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Thyme, Sage, Rosemary.

It should be noted that both of these foods contain carrageenan, an extract of seaweed, which is commonly used as a thickening and stabilizing agent in both pet foods and human foods, such as ice cream, puddings, and baby formulas. There has been longtime controversy about the use of carrageenan in food, with claims that it can be harmful both to humans and animals. According to this Wikipedia article, carrageenan has been used for centuries It doesn't seem fair to downgrade a cat food because carrageenan is among the ingredients, as Susan Thixton estimates that "60% to 70% of all canned pet foods include the ingredient carrageenan."

Syufy Cats' Review of Purrfect Bistro Beef Wellington

Merrick describes this flavor as containing "tender slices," presumably of beef. However, the solid portion of the food resembled small, uniform brown rectangles. I do not know if those were formed solely of beef, or a mixture of the named meat ingredients, as I saw no evidence of chicken liver or deboned chicken in the sauce.

Jenny, who has eaten most dry cat food throughout her life, licked up some of the juice and left. Jaspurr licked about two-thirds of the juice, then ate some of the meat. I then took the plate to Joey and Billy. They lapped up the remainder of the juice, then tucked into the meat portion, leaving only a small amount behind. I would rate their overall satisfaction with this canned food flavor as a 4 stars.

Overall Rating of the Purrfect Bistro Line of Cat Food

Based on these three products tested by my cats, I feel Purrfect Bistro deserves a rating of 4.5 stars. I would recommend especially the canned varieties to adult cats with no special medical needs. For cats with feline diabetes, geriatric cats, or cats with heart conditions, or Chronic Renal Failure, your veterinarian should be consulted before feeding these foods.
