When, Where and How I Got My Cat
Three (Pacci, Kahia, and Cleo) were adopted as seniors from Siamese Rescue, Nakimushi was adopted at 4 mo old from my local shelter, TJ was 2 yrs when we obtained him from an owner who could no longer keep him and Niki was purchased as a kitten from a pet store (before I knew there was a Siamese rescue !)
With so many wonderful Siamese in rescue and shelters needing homes, I will only adopt any future meezers.
I'd Describe My Cat As…
Each of my Siamese have their own distinctive purrsonalities:
Pacci has recently been diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy and is blind but has adjusted with few issues. He's my soul-mate who sleeps in my arms at night and has always been the 'welcome-wagon' for new fosters (I foster for VA Siamese Rescue Center). Based on observation and the fact that he was about 9 years old and not neutered, we believe he had been a backyard breeder's stud cat who was tossed out in an isolated area. I was lucky enough to adopt him from VA Siamese Rescue. He particularly loves female cats and can often be found curled up in a bed with Kahia. Although he's definitely the alpha male, there's not an aggressive bone in his body.
Kahia has been diagnosed with Lymphoma and will be crossing the bridge way too soon. We adopted her from Rocky Mountain Siamese Rescue. She's been a true diva - the alpha female who demands everything on her own terms - laps only when she wants, room service for her food, etc but who sleeps between our pillows at night.
TJ has been diagnosed with IBD and has some neurological issues with his back legs and can no longer jump onto furniture. His nickname is 'Gator Jaws' because he loves to give 'love bites'. He's been with us now for 10 years. Very laid-back and totally non-aggressive.
Cleo is a former foster from VA Siamese Rescue who distrusts all women but loves my hubby and can be found draped across his chest the minute he sits down. But the only time I'm allowed to get close to her is when I'm handing out the freeze-dried chicken treats.
Niki is also known as 'Baby Brat' even though she's now 8 yrs old. She's the only one of my gang who was actually bought as a kitten. From the moment she arrived, she knew this was her home. The first night here she crawled up the bed and under the covers. Typical of a sealpoint female, she's also a diva-in-training and definitely struts when we talk to her. Her favorite position is stretched out on her back teasing us with her tummy - but it's look don't touch !
Nakimushi was adopted from the local shelter where he was dumped as a kitten due to medical issues which he's since outgrown. Very much a Mamma's boy, he's my constant companion and his favorite place to sleep is anywhere he can touch me. He follows me from room to room and has to supervise everything I do from cooking to laundry. He's a modern 'wedgie' and is the most active, vocal and high-strung of my gang.
Advice
- Super intelligent
- Very inquisitive which along with their intelligence means they find creative and unusual ways to get into trouble such as opening doors, cabinets, latches, etc
- Playful - will often teach their people to play fetch
- Bond very strongly to their people and not as independent as other cats
- Require more of your time and attention
- Want to be on your lap, on your bed, supervising everything you do and most importantly in your heart ! They regard themselves as full members of the family and not just 'the cat'.
