What led me to adopting a shelter cat

We had talked about adding a second cat to our family so that our first furkid had a playmate. While listening to the radio I heard a public service announcement from the local APL - the shelter was nearing feline capacity and would conduct a special cat adoption day that weekend. I mentioned it at home but we didn't make any definite plans.

How many visits did you make before adopting?

We made a last minute decision to visit the shelter and didn't have much time to meet all the cats seeking adoption. There were rooms with cats playing and interacting, rooms with cats sleeping curled together and rows and rows of single cat cages. As I neared the last wall of cages I saw a large, older cat sleeping in the top corner cage. I put my fingers through the cage. He opened his eyes, put his paw on top of my fingers and looked at me as if to say "I'm tired, it's been rough, please take me home." As he closed his eyes, I decided I needed to take him home that day.

Advice

  • Don't overlook a cat that's had a less than perfect life. The amount of time you invest to build the cat's trust will be worth it in the end.
