What led me to adopting a shelter cat

My husband and I often visit animal shelters as an inexpensive way to bond and pass the time. We both love animals and visiting them always made us happy. When we moved into an apartment that allowed pets I began to think about owning a cat. For several weeks while my husband was at work, I would spend hours researching cat ownership information and looking through adoption ads. I saw many adoption ads with adorable kittens that were posted by individuals but I couldn't help but feel drawn to the animal shelter ads. I wanted to spare a life.

How many visits did you make before adopting?

My husband and I had an instant bond with a kitten right away. We looked at and played with several cats and kittens in a private room but one really stood out to us the most. We were not even planning to adopt that day, but within minutes of meeting her we knew we had to take her home. She was playful, alert, healthy, and loved to be petted. Those were all of the traits that we were looking for in our new family member.

Advice

  • My number one advice to those looking to adopt from an animal shelter is to take your time. We went to many different animal shelters over the course of a few weeks and no cat stood out to us until we ended up at this one shelter and found the one that changed our lives. Make sure that you spend time with each cat that you even think about adopting. Also keep in mind that cats may behave slightly different when in your home than at the shelter. For example, we didn't realize just how much the kitten that we adopted liked to be petted until we brought her home. Now she constantly arches her back when we walk by her.

My Cat's Name and Age at Adoption

She is playful, loving, silly, cuddly, soft, and a real sweet heart. I was never a cat person before I met and fell in love with her. We are truly lucky to have found her and have her as part of our family.

The Mutual Bond I Share With my Cat

She can read us just as we can read her. We have come to have this unspoken language with even just looks. She is very human-like and has a very unique personality.

Significant Benefits of our Relationship

We are in love with the unconditional love that we receive from her. She is the best listener.

Why I'd Do It All Over Again

The adoption process was easy and the love that we share with our kitten is priceless. I would do it over in a heartbeat.
